Ahead of a parliamentary delegation’s visit to Athens, co-chaired by S&D Euro MP Liem Hoang Ngoc, to investigate the role of the Troika (European Commission, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank), S&D Euro MPs call for a change of policy to help the country pursue its reforms and exit the crisis.
S&D Group leader Hannes Swoboda said: „The S&D Group – by sending an ‚alternative Troika‘ to Greece early on during the crisis, has championed the investigation into the role of the Troika in bailout programmes.
„I am very happy that the European Parliament has now decided to launch a fully-fledged investigation into the role of the Troika in member states receiving financial assistance.
“I have visited Greece several times in the past few years and have witnessed the disastrous consequences of the Troika’s policies.
“Troika-austerity has fundamentally hurt Greece and especially its most vulnerable citizens, so I look forward to finding hard evidence to prove the necessity of phasing out the Troika through the European Parliament’s report”.
#Socialist MEP and rapporteur of the European Parliaments‘ enquiry on the Troika Liem Hoang Ngoc added:#
„I will be going to Greece to witness the reality behind the Troika reports. This involves finding out how decisions where taken, why they were taken and by whom. It is also about listening those who have not yet been given a say. The frustration of citizens who have had to endure austerity and its consequences for years simply cannot be ignored.
„The Troika’s policies have failed. Its methods have challenged democratic principles which we thought were set in stone. It is high time that we dismantle the Troika, restore democracy and collectively create policies that work, not just for the economy, but also for society.“
